WHY Are REVIEWS SO Important? WHAT is the Google Business Profile?

What Is the "GBP"? How Do Reviews Affect Search Rank?

When you search online, Google provides the "BEST" results.

Google is in the BUSINESS of satisfying YOUR search requests.

How does Google rank business listings? Google ranks local business listings and Google Maps results using three core factors:

1. Relevance: How well the Google Business Profile for a business matches what a user is searching for. Google checks the business categories, description, listed services, and attributes to see if this company-provided information matches the search query.

2. Distance: For local searches, how close the business is to the searcher's location or the location mentioned in the search term. For local searches, the business hours are also considered. If a user does not type a location, Google uses their current device location.

3. Prominence: How well-known and trusted the business is offline and online. Google evaluates this using review quantity and star ratings, online directories (citations), web links (backlinks), and overall brand recognition. This also favors longevity and the accumulated online content.

Google controls over 90% of online searches. They DEFINE how we search - and we now refer to searching as "googling". To earn YOUR repeat business, Google must provide the most useful and relevant search results.

GBP search

The Google Map Pack: Top Three search results.

Your search generates "SERPs" - that is, search engine results pages.

Every search contains hundreds, usually thousands of results over many, many pages.

The "Google Map Pack" features the Top Three results for your search terms.

These TOP results claim over 60% of the resulting business!

You might not agree that this is "fair". Your business might be fully qualified to serve the customer. You might offer lower prices or faster service. I'm not here to sympathize with you. I am committed to telling you the No B.S. FACTS!

No BS Direct Marketing

No B.S. Marketing is grounded in cold, hard facts.

It is just a FACT that MOST searchers never look past the Top Three results!

The statistics vary, but an accurate average is that 61% of the searches direct their business to the Top Three listed companies in the Google Map Pack. In some cases, this percentage exceeds 75% of customers who choose one of the Top Three businesses.

This average is further skewed WITHIN the Map Pack, with the TOP company often receiving 50% of the pie, while the next two listed companies split the remaining customers.

GBP search

Over 60% to the TOP THREE, less than 30% to the rest...

The news gets worse for ALL other business listings:

After the Top Three "Map Pack" listings, you will find the "organic listings". These consist of page after page of every other possible match for the search terms. There might be HUNDREDS of listings spread over dozens of pages.

The FACT is that people are lazy! (This is especially true for searches on phones - which is now the MAJORITY!) Very few scroll down past the first page of SERPs. ALL the businesses listed on the following pages - after the TOP THREE - split less than 30% of the resulting business.

NOW - do you understand why your business seems "invisible"?

The ONLY way to "beat the system" is to PAY Google for a higher listing. In some categories, you can buy advertising for specific search terms. These paid ads appear as "sponsored" listings above the Map Pack. ONLY high-dollar sales can justify this expense - with costs that range from $5.00 to $10.00 per CLICK! That is, NOT per store visit, appointment, bid or sales presentation - ONLY per click through to your website! Even at that rate, most viewers ignore the ads and these expensive listings earn less than 10% of the search traffic.

I Can't Promise Fairness - ALL I Can Offer Are the

FACTS about Google Reviews and Search Rankings

There is a cruel joke that asks, "Where is the best place to HIDE a dead body?"

The answer: "The second page of Google!"

This is NOT funny if your business is found on page 2, 3, or 4....

Where do you start? HOW do you improve your Google ranking?

Refer back to the three primary factors in search ranking: Relevance, Location, and Prominence.

First, it is important to recognize that Google provides the GBP to every business for FREE! You can't PAY Google for higher ranking. BUT - you can COOPERATE with Google. That is, give Google what it needs to include your company in the SERPs.

Your Google Business Profile is a free, blank slate. Google will REWARD your business with higher search rankings when you do the following:

  • Claim and Verify: Go through the verification process on your Google Business Profile so Google can show your business as a qualified search result.

  • Complete All Details: Add accurate business hours, phone numbers, exact addresses, and the most specific primary and secondary categories available. Use the EXACT search terms for your services in your listing to boost relevance.

  • Collect and Reply to Reviews: Encourage customers to leave reviews and respond to every review to show active engagement. MORE reviews, CURRENT reviews, and reviews with the relevant search terms establish prominence.

  • Add Visuals and Update Content CONTINUOUSLY: Upload photos, videos, blog posts, press releases, or product listings to keep your profile active. Make continuous updates and remove outdated information.

  • For LOCAL businesses: Make sure that your listing includes EVERY location that you serve - and none that you don't

Also note that Google will penalize your search rankings when you DON'T cooperate, don't update your GBP, or include inaccurate information. You are effectively damaging Google's product: accurate search results.

The FREE first step: Competitor Scan

How do you know where you rank? How do you meaure your progress?

The Google Map Pack displays the Top Three search results based on Relevance, Location, and Prominence.

For local searches, businesses closest to the customer earn Prominence - IF they are open. For service providers covering entire states or regions, the other factors below have higher values.

The other qualifications include:

1. The accuracy and completeness of the GBP - as discussed above.

2. The QUANTITY and QUALITY of reviews for the business.

3. The match of every detail on your website and social media to the GBP data. This goes beyond the simple name, address, and phone number fields. (You would be amazed that MANY businesses FAIL at this most basic requirement.) The SAME business details must be included on the GBP and website, and other listings.

You Can Accurately Measure Your Current Rank with a FREE

"Competitor Scan"!

As shown above, the Competitor Scan generates a composite score - 0 to 100 - across FOUR variables:

  • Your Google Business Profile is scored on completeness and accuracy.

  • Your Google Reviews are compared to the competition based on quantity, quality (that is, average "stars"), and recency (with old reviews deleted, and more weight given for the latest reviews.)

  • Your website: Is it complete, accurate, and include recent updates.

  • This also now includes Search Engine Optimization scores that are valued by Google's "web spiders" AND the search functionality used by voice searches and AI chatbots.

Google reviews

Google reviews are a MAJOR factor in ranking your business - but only one of the four weighting factors. In the next articles, I will discuss EACH of the factors in depth.

For now, remember that this Competitor Scan is the FIRST STEP. We need a baseline to start improving your search engine ranking. Whatever line shows the lowest score indicates the immediate priority - lack of reviews, in the example pictured above.

In addition, we can run the same scan again in 60 to 90 days to gauge progress and reassess the NEXT priority. This is a never-ending process! You must accept the importance of your Google ranking and cooperate if you wish to see improvement - while also acknowledging that your fiercest competitors are not standing still.
